Managing the Committee: Depersonalizing Critique

Order Manuscript Editing

What do you do when a chapter comes back from your committee covered in red ink? The first impulse, for most of us, is to read the marks as a personal attack. It feels natural. It also does real professional damage, because a committee's critique is a set of mechanical adjustments meant to bring the document up to the standard it has to meet.

Some of the force of red ink is old conditioning. For many students, years of school taught that red marks meant failure, personal and final, and the reaction can arrive before you have read a single comment. Notice it. Committee revision works by different logic: the marks are a report on the document, each one tied to a specific page and each one something you can act on. Once you can look at a heavily annotated page and see a repair manual where you used to see a report card, revision becomes productive work. That shift is open to anyone willing to examine the old reaction and choose a more accurate one.

Practice radical depersonalization. Your committee is stress-testing the logic of the document, and when you set your ego apart from the paper, a request for major revisions turns into a to-do list. That change in perspective is a form of self-care for an advanced scholar. It also lets you fix structural weaknesses without your feelings steering the repair, keeps the project moving at a steady pace, and heads off the resentment that can damage the relationship between student and advisor.

Depersonalizing feedback also protects the most personal part of the work, which is the argument. A defensive scholar is guarding the current wording of their ideas, and the wording matters less than the ideas themselves. When a committee member marks a weak transition or an unsupported claim, they are showing you where the thesis is still hard to follow for a reader who didn't write it. Fix those places. The Manuscript Standard is a standard of transmission, and its whole aim is for what you know to arrive in the reader's mind intact.

Count your editor and your committee as part of quality control, since they are the last check between your argument and the permanent record. Treat them that way.
