Akashic Books is an independent Brooklyn publisher. Its list runs from literary fiction and memoir to nonfiction and poetry, and it is known for the Noir Series, city-by-city anthologies of original noir short fiction, as well as for the Kaylie Jones Books imprint.
Off the Grid Editing prepares fiction, memoir, and nonfiction manuscripts for writers who want their work in front of the editors at Akashic Books. Noir and crime fiction depend on pace and on dialogue that sounds like people talking, and memoir depends on a voice the reader trusts from the first page, so our editing starts there and works down to the sentence. We work in Chicago style. When you send guidelines from the press, we apply them.

Manuscript Editing Services for Akashic Books
We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.
Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.
Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.
Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Akashic Books.
Akashic Books publishes literary fiction, crime and noir, memoir and other nonfiction, and poetry. Its submissions page explains how the press considers new work.
