Manuscript Editing for Algonquin Books (Hachette)
Algonquin Books was founded in 1983 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to publish literary fiction and nonfiction, much of it by undiscovered writers from the South. It is best known for its fiction. Since 2024 it has been part of Little, Brown and Company at Hachette Book Group.
Off the Grid Editing prepares literary fiction and narrative nonfiction for writers aiming at Algonquin Books. A novel has to hold a reader through character and pacing, narrative nonfiction has to do the same with real events, and our editing works on both at the level of the scene, the paragraph, and the sentence. We work in Chicago style. When you send guidelines from the press, we apply them.
Our Promise
We will ensure that the final draft you receive is completely ready to submit to Algonquin Books. We work with you until it is ready or refund your payment in full. That commitment has held since 2002.
Our editors do not have access to your manuscript until an order is placed. Your draft is secure until you decide to proceed.
Manuscript Editing Services for Algonquin Books
We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.
Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.
Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.
Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Algonquin Books.
Algonquin Books publishes literary fiction and narrative nonfiction for adults, and its Algonquin Young Readers line publishes middle grade and young adult books. Its page at Hachette Book Group tells the history of the press and points to the books it publishes now. Start there: About Algonquin Books.
