Manuscript Editing for Art Journal Articles

Order Manuscript Editing Founded in 1941, Art Journal works to develop shared methods for understanding modern and contemporary art. It gives artists, art historians, and other writers room for essays, interviews, forums, and artists' projects. Taylor & Francis publishes it quarterly for the College Art Association, and its editor-in-chief is in History of Art and Visual Culture at UC Santa Cruz.

Articles run no more than 8,000 words, notes included, and shorter texts are encouraged. Citations follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition, notes, with the exceptions set out in the CAA Publications Style Guide. Notes are full once and short after; ibid. stays and op. cit. goes. Submissions may be in any language with a 250-word English abstract. Up to 20 images are allowed, each captioned in CAA order with alt text of 15 to 30 words. Review is double-blind. Off the Grid Editing applies the CAA style guide and sets each caption in its required order. Submissions go through the Taylor & Francis Submission Portal.

Human Manuscript Editor

Natural Intelligence for Art Journal

Natural Intelligence is our name for editorial judgment: an editor who reads your manuscript the way Art Journal's editors and peer reviewers will and verifies every change before it comes back to you. We read as an art historian does, checking that each artist, title, date, and medium matches across captions and text. Track Changes stays on throughout.

Our Promise

We will ensure that the final draft you receive is completely ready to submit to Art Journal. We work with you until it is ready or refund your payment in full. That commitment has held since 2002.

Our editors do not have access to your manuscript until an order is placed. Your draft is secure until you decide to proceed.

Manuscript Editing and Proofreading for Art Journal

We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.

Manuscript Copy Editing

Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.

Manuscript Line Editing

Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.

Manuscript Proofreading

Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Art Journal.

Chicago Notes and CAA Style for Art Journal

CAA's submission guidelines cover length, images, and style. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.

Our journal article and essay editing page explains how we edit art history, and academic proofreading is the final pass. If English is your second language, see English language editing for researchers. For books, see Taylor & Francis and Routledge manuscript editing. We also prepare articles for The Art Bulletin and Grey Room.
