Manuscript Editing for Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies Articles
Published since 1970, Aztlán: A Journal of Chicano Studies is edited at the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center. Since 2024, University of California Press has published it with the Center's press. It presents “original research that is relevant to or informed by the Chicano experience,” connecting Chicano studies with Latino, ethnic, American, and global studies. Each issue also carries a thematic dossier and an artist's communiqué.
Essays run 10,000 to 12,000 words, counting notes, references, captions, and space for images, and anything under 10,000 comes back unread. Citations are Chicago author-date with a Works Cited list, supplemented by the Aztlán Style Sheet and its guide to names and terms. Essays may be written in English or Spanish. The abstract runs up to 200 words in a separate file, and a Spanish essay adds an English translation of it. Our essay editing checks names and terms against the journal's guide. Review is double-anonymous, and submissions go through Scholastica with the journal's checklist attached.
Our Promise
We will ensure that the final draft you receive is completely ready to submit to Aztlán. We work with you until it is ready or refund your payment in full. That commitment has held since 2002.
Our editors do not have access to your manuscript until an order is placed. Your draft is secure until you decide to proceed.
Essay Editing and Proofreading for Aztlán
We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.
Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.
Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.
Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Aztlán.
The Center's submission guidelines cover length, the style sheet, and permissions. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.
See journal article and essay editing for how we work on scholarly essays, and academic proofreading for the last read before submission. For books, see University of California Press manuscript editing. We also prepare articles for Latino Studies.
