Manuscript Editing for Comparative Literature Journal Articles

Order Manuscript Editing Founded in 1949, Comparative Literature “explores issues in literary history and theory” where national literatures, global trends, and theory meet. Duke describes it as the oldest journal in its field in the United States. The University of Oregon owns and edits it, the American Comparative Literature Association sponsors it, and Duke University Press publishes it quarterly.

Articles run up to 12,000 words, notes included, with an abstract of about 200 words in the third person and three to five lowercase keywords. The house style sheet combines two manuals: parenthetical in-text citations follow the MLA Handbook, 9th edition, while the reference list follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition. All notes are endnotes, limited and discursive. Every non-English quotation needs a translation, with the original first in block quotations. Review is blind, by at least two readers, and each author may submit once every 24 months. Off the Grid Editing applies both halves of the house style and checks each translation's placement. Submissions go through ScholarOne.

Human Manuscript Editor

Natural Intelligence for Comparative Literature

Natural Intelligence is our name for editorial judgment: an editor who reads your manuscript the way Comparative Literature's editors and peer reviewers will and verifies every change before it comes back to you. We read as a comparatist does, checking that your argument holds across languages and literary traditions. Track Changes stays on throughout.

Our Promise

We will ensure that the final draft you receive is completely ready to submit to Comparative Literature. We work with you until it is ready or refund your payment in full. That commitment has held since 2002.

Our editors do not have access to your manuscript until an order is placed. Your draft is secure until you decide to proceed.

Manuscript Editing and Proofreading for Comparative Literature

We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.

Manuscript Copy Editing

Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.

Manuscript Line Editing

Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.

Manuscript Proofreading

Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Comparative Literature.

MLA Citations and a Chicago Reference List

Duke's journal page links the Comparative Literature style guide. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.

See journal article and essay editing for how we edit literary scholarship, and academic proofreading for the last read before submission. For books, see Duke University Press manuscript editing. We also prepare articles for Poetics Today and New Literary History.
