Manuscript Editing for The Journal of Japanese Studies Articles

Order Manuscript Editing The Journal of Japanese Studies has published research on Japan across the social sciences and humanities since 1974, along with translations of Japanese scholarship and substantive book reviews. The Society for Japanese Studies publishes it twice a year with University of California Press. It welcomes comparative and transnational work in which Japan plays a major part and expects authors to engage Japanese-language sources and scholarship.

Manuscripts run up to 13,000 words, notes and bibliography included, and most essays reach at least 10,000. Notes are single-spaced footnotes in Chicago notes-and-bibliography style, with short author-title forms repeated in place of ibid., and a bibliography is required. Japanese follows Hepburn romanization with macrons, though common place names such as Tokyo and Kyoto go without. The abstract runs 300 words or fewer in the third person, with four to six keywords. Review is double-blind, and the editors aim to decide within three months. Off the Grid Editing checks macrons and name order throughout. Submissions go through Scholastica.
