Manuscript Editing for Philosophy and Literature Journal Articles
For over fifty years, Philosophy and Literature has explored the dialogue between literary and philosophical studies: the aesthetics of literature, the theory of criticism, philosophical readings of literature, and the literary treatment of philosophy. Its stated ideals are “Conceptual clarity, humane depth, and elegance of presentation.” Johns Hopkins University Press publishes it twice a year, and its editor is at Bard College.
Articles run 6,000 to 8,000 words, and Notes and Fragments 1,500 to 4,000. Any bibliographic format is accepted at submission. Accepted pieces follow the most recent Chicago Manual of Style with endnotes, full information at first citation and short forms after, and no Works Cited list. Articles need an abstract of 100 words or fewer. The editor reads every submission, a subset gets a second detailed review, and reader reports are not provided. Off the Grid Editing prepares the endnotes to the journal's style guide. You email the submission as a Word file, with your last name and category in the subject line.
Our Promise
We will ensure that the final draft you receive is completely ready to submit to Philosophy and Literature. We work with you until it is ready or refund your payment in full. That commitment has held since 2002.
Our editors do not have access to your manuscript until an order is placed. Your draft is secure until you decide to proceed.
Manuscript Editing and Proofreading for Philosophy and Literature
We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.
Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.
Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.
Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Philosophy and Literature.
The JHU Press journal page links the author guidelines and style guide. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.
Our journal article and essay editing page explains how we edit scholarly articles, and academic proofreading covers the final check. For books, see Johns Hopkins University Press manuscript editing. We also prepare articles for The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism and New Literary History.
