Manuscript Editing for Polity Journal Articles

Order Manuscript Editing Since 1968, Polity has published original research on all aspects of political life, with particular attention to work on “questions of race, gender, class, colonialism, and empire.” The University of Chicago Press publishes it quarterly for the Northeastern Political Science Association.

Initial submissions run up to 12,000 words, footnotes and tables included, with each table or figure counting as 250 words. Accepted manuscripts follow the Chicago Manual of Style with all citations in footnotes, no parenthetical references, and no bibliography; later notes use a short form. The abstract runs no more than 250 words, with up to six keywords, on the title page. Writing should be accessible to a general political science audience, and uncommon non-English words are translated. Review is double-blind after an editorial assessment. Off the Grid Editing converts parenthetical citations to footnotes and removes the bibliography. Submissions go through Editorial Manager.

Human Manuscript Editor

Natural Intelligence for Polity

Natural Intelligence is our name for editorial judgment: an editor who reads your manuscript the way the editors and peer reviewers of Polity will and verifies every change before it comes back to you. We read as a political scientist does, checking that your argument about power is clear to readers across the discipline. Track Changes stays on throughout.

Our Promise

We will ensure that the final draft you receive is completely ready to submit to Polity. We work with you until it is ready or refund your payment in full. That commitment has held since 2002.

Our editors do not have access to your manuscript until an order is placed. Your draft is secure until you decide to proceed.

Manuscript Editing and Proofreading for Polity

We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.

Manuscript Copy Editing

Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.

Manuscript Line Editing

Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.

Manuscript Proofreading

Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Polity.

Chicago Footnotes for Polity

The University of Chicago Press instructions for authors cover length, citations, and review. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.

Our journal article and essay editing page explains how we edit scholarly articles, and academic proofreading is the final pass. If English is your second language, see English language editing for researchers. We also prepare articles for Perspectives on Politics and Political Theory.
