Manuscript Editing for Studies in American Humor Journal Articles
Studies in American Humor “specializes in humanistic research on humor in America (loosely defined).” It takes critical, historical, archival, ethnographic, and digital studies of humor in performance, print, and other media, from any period. The journal of the American Humor Studies Association, it has appeared continuously since 1982, twice a year, from Penn State University Press. Its editor is at SUNY Empire State University.
Scholarly articles run 5,000 to 8,000 words, and empirical or quantitative studies are not reviewed. Citations follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition, chapters 13 and 14, with a full citation at first reference, parenthetical citations after that, and no separate bibliography. The first mention of any primary source gives its original year in parentheses. Non-English quotations need translations in the text. The abstract runs up to 200 words, with no first person, and review is double-anonymous. Contributors must be association members by publication. Off the Grid Editing converts repeat notes to parenthetical form. Submissions go through Editorial Manager.

Manuscript Editing and Proofreading for Studies in American Humor
We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.
Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.
Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.
Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Studies in American Humor.
The journal's submission guidelines cover length, citations, images, and membership. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.
Our journal article and essay editing page explains how we edit scholarly articles, and academic proofreading is the final pass. We also prepare articles for American Literature and American Literary History.
