Manuscript Editing for American Quarterly Journal Articles
Since 1952 American Quarterly has been the flagship journal of the American Studies Association. It publishes interdisciplinary scholarship on the sociopolitical, economic, and cultural formations of the United States and of the Americas more broadly. Johns Hopkins University Press brings it out quarterly, and its editorial office is at the University of Notre Dame.
An essay has between 5,000 and 10,000 words to make its case, and the endnotes count against that limit. When a draft runs long, our essay editing tightens the prose first so the notes, which in American studies often carry the archive, can stay. Citations follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition, with a full note at a source's first appearance and shortened notes after that. There is no bibliography. The title and an abstract of up to 200 words take the first page, and the essay begins on page two. Review is triple-blind, so your name has to come out of the abstract, the essay, the notes, and any supplementary files before you submit through ScholarOne.
Our Promise
We will ensure that the final draft you receive is completely ready to submit to American Quarterly. We work with you until it is ready or refund your payment in full. That commitment has held since 2002.
Our editors do not have access to your manuscript until an order is placed. Your draft is secure until you decide to proceed.
Essay Editing and Proofreading for American Quarterly
We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.
Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.
Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.
Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to American Quarterly.
The American Studies Association's submission guidelines cover essay length, notes, and triple-blind review. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.
Our journal article and essay editing page explains how we work on scholarly essays, and academic proofreading covers the final check before you submit. For larger revisions, see developmental editing. If your American Quarterly essay is part of a book in progress, our Johns Hopkins University Press manuscript editing page is for books headed to that press, and manuscript editing services lays out each level of editing we offer. We also prepare articles for more than 200 journals.
