Manuscript Editing for Journal of American Folklore Articles
Published since 1888, the Journal of American Folklore is the flagship journal of the American Folklore Society. It “engages academic and public folklore from anywhere in the world,” publishing essays, commentaries, creative writing, and reviews of books, exhibitions, films, and recordings. The University of Illinois Press publishes it quarterly. A collective of editors at several universities leads it, and the Society's senior managing editor works from Indiana University Bloomington.
Long essays run 8,000 to 14,000 words and short essays 3,000 to 5,000, abstract, notes, and bibliography included. The journal follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition, author-date, with the exceptions in its own style guide: in-text citations take the form (author year:page) with no space after the colon, the list is titled “References Cited,” and notes are endnotes with no ibid. Each essay opens with an abstract of 50 to 75 words, and keywords come from the AFS Ethnographic Thesaurus. Review is double-blind. Our essay editing applies the JAF exceptions to Chicago throughout. Submissions go through Scholastica.
Our Promise
We will ensure that the final draft you receive is completely ready to submit to Journal of American Folklore. We work with you until it is ready or refund your payment in full. That commitment has held since 2002.
Our editors do not have access to your manuscript until an order is placed. Your draft is secure until you decide to proceed.
Essay Editing and Proofreading for the Journal of American Folklore
We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.
Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.
Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.
Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Journal of American Folklore.
The Society's submission guidelines link the JAF author style guide. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.
See journal article and essay editing for how we edit scholarly essays, and academic proofreading for the last read before submission. We also prepare articles for American Quarterly and The Journal of American History.
