Manuscript Editing for Religion & Literature Journal Articles

Order Manuscript Editing Since 1984, Religion & Literature has published scholarship on the relations between two human concerns, the religious impulse and literary forms, in any era, place, or language. The University of Notre Dame publishes it three times a year, and its editor is in Notre Dame's Department of English. It welcomes any scholarly approach that treats religion “as a living tradition,” including essays in which literature extends or challenges theology.

Essays run 6,500 to 10,000 words, notes and bibliography included. Citations follow the Chicago Manual of Style as modified by the journal's house style sheet: shortened endnotes, Ibid. for consecutive citations, and a full bibliography. Quotations in other languages give both the original and a translation. Religious terms are capitalized according to the Liturgical Press Style Guide, with exceptions such as lowercase “scripture.” Review is blind, so your name stays out of the manuscript and the file name. Our essay editing applies the house style sheet throughout. You email both a PDF and a Word version to the managing editors.

Natural Intelligence for Religion & Literature

Natural Intelligence is our name for editorial judgment: an editor who reads your manuscript the way Religion & Literature's editors and peer reviewers will and verifies every change before it comes back to you. We read as a scholar of religion and literature does, checking that each reading does justice to both the text and the tradition. Track Changes stays on throughout.

Our Promise

Essay Editing and Proofreading for Religion & Literature

We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.

Manuscript Copy Editing

Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.

Manuscript Line Editing

Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.

Manuscript Proofreading

Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Religion & Literature.

Chicago Style and the House Style Sheet for Religion & Literature

The journal's submission guidelines and house style sheet cover notes, translations, and capitalization. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.

See journal article and essay editing for how we work on literary essays, and academic proofreading for the final pass. We also prepare articles for the Harvard Theological Review and The Journal of Religion.
