Manuscript Editing for Native American and Indigenous Studies Journal Articles

Order Manuscript Editing The Native American and Indigenous Studies Association publishes its journal, Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS), with the University of Minnesota Press twice a year. Since 2014 it has offered interdisciplinary scholarship in international Native American and Indigenous studies, and it encourages research grounded in Indigenous methodologies. Its co-editors are at the University of Victoria.

Feature-length manuscripts run 10,000 to 12,000 words, endnotes and references included, and open with an abstract of 150 to 200 words. Citations may use either Chicago system, author-date or notes and bibliography, as long as the notes are endnotes and a reference list or bibliography follows. Empirical studies document their ethical protocols, including any approvals from Native nations, and each group is named by its own designation. Review is double-anonymous. Off the Grid Editing checks that your citation system holds from the first note to the last. You email a single Word file to the journal, with your biography in a separate document.

Human Manuscript Editor

Natural Intelligence for Native American and Indigenous Studies

Natural Intelligence is our name for editorial judgment: an editor who reads your manuscript the way the editors and peer reviewers of Native American and Indigenous Studies will and verifies every change before it comes back to you. We read as an Indigenous studies scholar does, checking that each community appears under its own name and that your methods are stated plainly. Track Changes stays on throughout.

Our Promise

We will ensure that the final draft you receive is completely ready to submit to Native American and Indigenous Studies. We work with you until it is ready or refund your payment in full. That commitment has held since 2002.

Our editors do not have access to your manuscript until an order is placed. Your draft is secure until you decide to proceed.

Manuscript Editing and Proofreading for NAIS

We offer three levels of manuscript editing depending on what your manuscript needs. Each is described below so you can choose the service that fits where your draft is right now.

Manuscript Copy Editing

Grammar and usage, awkward phrasing, repetition, and passive voice corrected, then clarity, concision, sentence structure, transitions, and tone, with your style manual applied throughout and a final proofread. For authors whose argument and structure are settled.

Manuscript Line Editing

Clarity, emphasis, and paragraph structure: topic sentences, transitions, and sentences reordered within a paragraph, with every fact and claim kept as you wrote it. Includes copy editing and a final proofread.

Manuscript Proofreading

Spelling, punctuation, typos, capitalization, grammar, and usage corrected with minimal wording changes, for manuscripts that have been edited and need a last check before submission to Native American and Indigenous Studies.

Chicago Endnotes for NAIS

NAISA's submission guidelines cover length, citation, and ethical protocols. If you have reviewer comments from an earlier submission, send them with your manuscript and we will address each one. If you have questions about which service is right for your manuscript, contact us directly. We respond to every inquiry the same day during business hours.

Our journal article and essay editing page explains how we edit scholarly articles, and academic proofreading is the final pass. For books, see University of Minnesota Press manuscript editing. We also prepare articles for American Indian Quarterly and the American Indian Culture and Research Journal.
